The Origins of PlayStation (1994)

In December 1994, Sony Computer Entertainment released the original PlayStation (PSX). Sony was relatively new to the gaming industry at the time and so it was a bold and risky move. The PlayStation featured progressive 3D graphics and a huge collection of games, many of which, like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy VII have become classics in the gaming world. Sony’s relationship with developers and its CD-based system helped PlayStation to establish its place in the world of gaming.

PlayStation 2

Released six years later in the year 2000, the PlayStation 2 holds a significant place in history as the best-selling video game console of all time. Its library had over 3,800 games and introduced the ability to play DVDs. Not only did it provide gamers with hours of fun but it became an entertainment centre for the whole family.

PlayStation 3

In 2006, the PlayStation 3 marked a significant shift in gaming with the introduction of high-definition graphics. The PlayStation 3 featured Blu-ray technology, allowing it to create stunning graphics and immersive gameplay experiences. Initially, it was priced very high and so sales were slow to start with, the PS3 eventually gained momentum and delivered exclusive titles like The Last of Us and Uncharted.

PlayStation 4

In 2013, we were given the PlayStation 4, and we embraced this new revolution in social gaming. With features like the Share button on the DualShock 4 controller, players could easily capture and share gameplay moments. The PS4 game database brought gamers from all walks of life to enjoy games such as Horizon Zero Dawn and Spider-Man.

PlayStation 5

The PlayStation 5 (PS5) was released in 2020 and represents the latest peak of gaming technology. It has a lightning-fast SSD which reduces load times and ray tracing capabilities to deliver breath-taking visuals. The PS5 has continued the tradition of exclusive titles like Demon’s Souls and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
